A New Vision for Land Use in Scotland: The Way Forward

USE THIS ONE – SEDA Report launch POSTER banner.jpg

The free on-line launch and discussion of SEDA's Report 'A New Vision for Land Use in Scotland: 6 Conversations', and its recommendations for land use policy, based on the highly successful events of the same name, held by SEDA in March and April 2021.

Released on 23 August, the Land Conversation Report summarises the key themes that emerged in each of the six events, where people from many sectors involved in working with, planning and accessing our land, discussed how it could be managed in the future for the benefit of many, and to meet the challenges of climate and social change, and other current priorities . In each case, key issues from the Conversations are noted, and common themes identified, along with the 'elephants in the room' that are leading to these situations. The report, sets out eight recommendations to tackle the challenges facing biodiversity, food production, renewable energy, health and well-being.

The Report says that a co-ordinated approach is required that calls for the rapid development of new strategies and plans alongside reforms to existing regulations and continued investment in innovative businesses, public services and infrastructure. If implemented, new Healthy Food, Agroecology and Sustainable Place strategies would be combined with strengthened requirements under the Land Rights and Responsibilities Statement as well as Climate Impact Certificates detailing land use impacts. The New Vision for Land Use in Scotland report also calls for continued investment in transport, renewable energy and communications infrastructure across Scotland along with seed funding for innovative new businesses. The integrated approach would be underpinned by support for secondary and tertiary education in creating a climate conscious, motivated and skilled workforce.

For this event, the authors, Dr. Richard Atkins of SEDA and Prof. Davy McCracken of SRUC will present the key ideas and measures in the Report that could really make a difference. These will be investigated and discussed by a panel of speakers from different aspects of community, economy, food and farming, and includes:

Professor Ronald MacDonald of the University of Glasgow

Professor Mads Fischer Moller of SRUC

Nikki Yoxall of Grampian Graziers

Professor Deb Roberts , Deputy Chief Executive and Executive Director of Science, The James Hutton Institute

The panel will invite your comments and queries, before SEDA will also outline their new body, SEDA Land, that is being set up on the back of this, to work on these issues.

The Report can be downloaded for free at the link below, or a printed copy can be bought from the SEDA website at the Shop.
