SEDA / A&DS Materials Library Earth Building Night
SEDA and A&DS Materials Library present their annual collaborative materials event: this time looking to (re)introduce the Scottish architectural community to the age-old repertoire of earthen building techniques.
The craft of transforming the earth beneath our feet into floors, plasters and walls is as old as construction itself and has not simply survived but been honed and refined for use in a contemporary context and is currently enjoying a renaissance – and renewed research interest - thanks to a dedicated community of architects, builders, hobbyists and research partners.
This event shall present practitioners with extensive experience with earth building to encourage its further uptake across Scotland.
Featured speakers:
Rowland Keable: Based in London, Director Rammed Earth Consulting CIC, Honorary Associate Professor UNESCO Chair of Earthen Architecture, on understanding current practice in Earth construction
Joel Franklyn: stone mason and turf builder, based on Skye. Joel lives and works on a small croft on the Isle of Skye. He is a stonemason conservator, working all over Scotland the wider UK, Spain and France. He has trained in the turf building in Iceland and has invited to run courses in turf building at more than one EBUKI Clayfests. He has recently been involved with building with turf on a project for Arc Architects in Glen Doll, Angus.
