SEDA / ACAN Debate. Zero Carbon Homes: How Can They Be Healthy Too?

  • Many Studios 3 Ross Street Glasgow, Scotland, G1 5DS United Kingdom (map)

Our future homes need to be warmer and more airtight, and in the drive to be zero carbon, could be packed with materials that we know offgas pollutants into the air. What do we need to do to make sure that these new homes don’t create new health problems, from poor air quality, humidity, overheating and other basic design issues? How can we make them positive contributors to good health, and not causes of future problems?

In this event SEDA, with ACAN, will look to discuss both what we can do practically to reduce health issues, particularly through indoor air pollution and poor air quality, and investigate where we can look for better principles of supportive design for where people live. It will look at key issues like the ventilation that is needed in low energy homes, the materials we use, and how we can use and maintain these homes to stop issues with moisture. A main reference to this will be the messages in the recent HEMAC / SEDA Guide to Indoor Air Quality in Airtight Homes, that you can download for free from the SEDA website, or order a pint copy.

This event, held in conjunction with ACAN, will be chaired by current SEDA Chair Catherine Cosgrove, and will feature amongst others:

·       Chris Morgan of John Gilbert Architects and main author of SEDA’s new Guide, as well previous ones on Sustainable Renovation and Deconstruction

·       Prof. Tim Sharpe of Head of Architecture at Strathclyde University and part of the HEMAC network
