SEDA Solar Seminar #4 - Building Integrated and Intelligent Solar Design

This webinar will introduce case studies of two building integrated PV projects, the Solar XXI in Portugal and the Helios House in UK.

Two short presentations will be followed by Q&A and discussions.

1. An introduction of the INETI's Solar XXI Building PV system by Helder Gonçalves, Director, Energy Laboratory.

2. An introduction to Helios House – a fully integrated solar installation by Chris Askew, Founder, ASKEWCAVANNA Architects.

Solar XXI by architects Pedro Cabrito and Isabel Diniz for the National Institute of Engineering (INETI) outside Lisbon was introduced at Eurosun 2008 in Lisbon. Some 40% of the south façade comprises vertical multi-crystalline PV panels – 19 in all; each storey-height panel about 5m2, with a net total of about 96m2 (12kWp). In 2008, the façade produced approximately 30kWh/day, indicating 10,950kWh annually or 114kWh/m2 collector surface – believable for a vertical array in this region. The amorphous silicon array in the car park totalled 95m2 (6kWp) and yielded 24kWh/day, or 8,760kWh annually. Overall the PV met 72% of electrical demand, or 74.6kWh/day – 22.7kWh/m2 of the total heated floor area of 1,200m2. A publication of 2012 indicates a 2nd thin-film array of 110m2 (12kWp) brought 2011 yield up to demand.

Helios House is a headquarters office and training centre for Solarsense UK, a company delivering renewable technology installations. The brief was to design it as a demonstration house to show off renewable technologies. The building is design to Passivhaus level of airtightness and insulation. It features a Paul Novus 450 MVHR, underfloor heating powered from Ground Source Heat Pump, Loxone smart home automation, and a fully integrated 12.85kWp solar pv roof comprising the whole of the south facing roof, incorporating feature roof lights over the main space.
